Alphabetical distribution of surname is the bane of my existence, I re-run the stats every year to try and spread out registration evenly, and it never works... In Nguni languages, apparently, the "um" prefix denotes a noun, which is rendered in Western spelling conventions with an initial M, so it's a very common pattern with surnames which make a noun out of a descriptive quality.
