James Thurber! Happiness! I loved writing this chapter, and it's even fun to update. I don't remember writing a lot of this actually quite complex and intricate analyses of structural and linguistic breakdown in his fairy tales, and you know, it's good analysis. Although I still can't quite see how to tie it more firmly to the intro chapter, I still feel as though I'm being asked to do something I've already done. Still, it could be Carter, I shall stop whinging. It has also occurred to me that I have an extra 10 000 words to play with, and can probably stick back the analysis of Tepper's Beauty which I had to take out of the thesis owing to the fundamental incompatability between the thesis word limit and my hopeless prolixity. *joyously unleashes Tepper on unsuspecting academics*

A horrible, horrible realisation has hit me. This book is being published in America. They're going to change all my spelling to the American versions! I feel so dirty! As if it isn't bad enough to have to change the format of the entire thing to reflect the vagaries of the Chicago style instead of my preferred Harvard... Honestly, it's insane. Can't academia get its little highly-educated ducks in a row sufficiently to stick to one standardised format within a discipline? But no. And most of the formats are American. MLA, Harvard, Chicago. It would feel better if it was some kind of cultural clash between American and British formats, instead of making the rest of us scurry around re-fighting the academic equivalent of the Civil War. Anyway, I think I'm going to spend a lot of time religiously changing "that" back to "which" on the proof copy, and de-capitalising after a colon. American English. *snort* (No offense intended to much-loved American friends, but honestly, I find your language weird).

All the people sending me snow should please carry on, it's making an appreciable difference to the temperature here. Still no actual rain, but it made a valiant attempt to drizzle last night. If you carry on at this rate... well, actually, it'll be autumn. Seasons, thank heavens for them.

Oh, yes - all you LJ types, any idea why this bloody system suddenly won't let me log in properly? It currently refuses to save my login from one screen to the next, so I have to keep typing name and password. With the net result that I can't update my Friends list, since it's two screens away from a login. I had set cookies to refuse, which does affect login, but I have now set them back (three days, five bootups ago), and the LJ system doesn't seem to be trying to set them any more. In Thakkyspeech, it just hates me.
