another day older and deeper in debt
Wednesday, 2 March 2005 10:07 pmNow officially within my clutches: one classload of innocent, fresh-faced, recently first-year students, all cowed and terrified by Middle English. To the point, in fact, when extracting any sort of response out of them at all this morning was darned near impossible. I hope they're just intimidated by their new second-year dignity, otherwise it's going to be one of those meringues-into-a-black-hole classes, which is horrendously draining. Students, such vampires.
Interesting things which happened today:
- Ounce chased Golux up a tree and onto the wall of the back courtyard, and then fell off, with maximum loss of dignity. I can now identify the cat for "I am calm and unscathed while you have lost all possible style points," which is what I assume Golux was conveying during the incident. There is cosmic justice in the world.
- Bought new memory module for my computer, which is currently running in a cheerfully snail-like way on 128 MG. *hangs head in shame*. Shall be able to feed it another 256 next week, it being all I can afford at the moment. *thinks longingly of gig*
- Invented new and surprisingly delicious onion quichey thing, with cream, based on a half-sentence reference in Byatt's Possession. Any excuse will do, apparently.
- Scored random monitor for my campus computer, which means it actually works now, calloo callay. Now all I need is a telephone and I might just start to believe that My Department Loves Me. Which it doesn't, but these little illusions are so precious.
- Madly updated webpage with all the new seminar info, discovering in the process the trick which has been eluding me for 3 years, namely how to format html tables so that IE, Netscape, Opera and Firefox all read them properly. Am I the only person on the planet who still codes HTML from scratch? *makes embarassed circles with toe.*
- Discovered nice new critical article on narrative, representation and metafiction, lurking in one of the Patricia McKillips I just re-read. (Tower at Stony Wood. Also, weirdly enough, a knightly romance quest thingy. Warning: morphic resonance at work).
RIP Joseph, sourdough starter. Bugger this hot weather. He fermented, and died of alcohol poisoning. Will resurrect him as Zombie!Joseph when it's cooled down a bit. I'm missing the bread-baking.
