They make for incredibly zen watching - curiously soothing, although tragically missing actual blocks of ice or blowtorches, and therefore inferior. Also, the chirpy little theme tune might drive you crazy.
The latest issue of Subterranean magazine features a marvellous Charles Stross short story about global warming and the Devil. I recommend Elizabeth Bear's chilling little water-horse, which is chilling for exactly the wrong reasons. I also like her column in defense of fan fiction, specifically its narrative pleasures.
