That was the Weekend of Bad Films, that was. Owing to the Evil Landlord's computer-game-induced fondness for it, I ordered him a copy of Wing Commander, more or less as a joke, but then of course we had to watch it. Dreadful film - I was expecting total cheese, but not quite that degree of lame plot-lack, cursory special effects and wooden acting. And I say that as someone with a serious spaceship fixation. When the EL insisted it wasn't that bad (he's just all partial because it's apparently very faithful to the game) and that he's seen far worse movies, I said "Name three." And he couldn't.

Although actually, on mature reflection, I can. It was definitely worse than Daredevil or Electra, or even Aeon Flux, but it was conversely considerably more enjoyable than Spawn, marginally more coherent than Jumper, and far less annoying than Shrek the Third. I think it gained points on never actually having pretended to be anything meaningful in the first place.

We also watched Army of Darkness, a copy of which I finally tracked down on Amazon Marketplace. Serious nostalgia value - I think I last watched it on bad video copy at about 2am, while drunk, at a CLAW video evening back in the dawn of time. It is a Very Silly Film, TM. But entertainingly so, and at least the jo, who has never seen it before, enjoyed it. (Particularly once we'd reassured her that it wasn't taking itself seriously. I'm a bit worried that she thought it could have been.) Is it just me, or does Xander from Buffy actually want to be Bruce Campbell, or at least Ash, when he grows up?

It's the ten-day vac, and the campus is pleasantly deserted. I've spent a blissfully uninterrupted day tidying my desk, catching up on email, and playing Bejewelled. Now I shall go home early, pausing only for an eye exam to see if I can discover why my contact lenses appear to be giving me headaches every time I wear the damned things.

Last Night I Dreamed: I was working for some high-status internet outfit, possibly BoingBoing, in a giant warehouse office packed with geeks. This was invaded by aliens, wearing hooded cloaks like Jawas but with slightly catlike faces; they lowered themselves into the office on ropes from the roof and rounded up everyone while waving laser pistols around. I managed to edge to the door by moving whenever they were looking elsewhere, but last night's massive storm woke me up with hail and high winds before I could actually escape.
