Heh. New York Times gave it a good (ish) review; they think it's better than Star Wars, if too unassuming. The Rotten Tomatoes reviews are predominantly good. There's hope! All you UK and US people, go and see it, at least once, soon, it needs to be successful so that Joss gets to make two sequels and rule the world, mwa-ha-ha!

I should add that jo&stv are possibly the world's best dinner guests, at least from the point of view of the cook. They both wade into the meal with sufficient dedication that the post-prandial hour or so is spent flat on the carpet, recovering. I cherish a mental image of jo going two-handed at the bone from a leg of garlic pork, with a fine gusto resulting in pork grease not only on the end of her nose, but on her ears, too. Stv managed two of the chocolate mousses, an almost superhuman feat. Gratifying people.

Jessica, I have a scone to pick with you ... your Sunday Morning Scones recipe is fabulous, but I can't get them to rise properly. What am I doing wrong?

Hmmm. How much baking powder are you putting into the mix? It's quite a high proportion - three and a half tsp to 500ml flour. If the quantities are correct, how fresh is your baking powder? If it's oldish and you haven't used it for anything else lately, it may have gone stale. Also, oven temp may sometimes affect the rise; this recipe uses a very hot oven (230/450 degrees), and if it's too cold, they may not rise quickly enough.

I dunno! What are they looking like? soft and spready flat, or like little hard bullets? More symptoms before I can diagnose!

Yes, 3.5 tsps ... yes, the baking powder may be stale. It's probably about five years old *blush*

Otherwise - they don't spread much at all from the initial shape. They taste good, and sufficiently scone-like, but just don't get the airy lifty thing happening.

I'll check what oven temperature I have down as well - might be that the oven is a bit cold, but I don't think so.

The Operative is the bad guy in Serenity: he's an Alliance agent who's after River. By all accounts, he's dead scarey and pretty cool.

Good lord, challenged on my own turf. While this raises interesting philosopho-lingual questions (is it in fact possible to have a correct spelling of a strictly colloquial word?), the dictionary in fact spells it "scary." In other words, I will have to admit that I wasn't concentrating and misspelled it. Put it down to my state of grump.
