I seem to have been more or less on another planet for the last few days, which I suppose is a reasonably logical response to (a) lots of painkillers, and (b) still feeling as though I've been socked on the jaw. Damned ex-wisdom teeth. One of the stitches came adrift over the weekend and wrapped itself lovingly around some remaining teeth, declining to be dislodged for a couple of days and contributing its small mite to the ongoing dull ache. The problem with teeth is that one has an incredibly misleading sense of what's going on inside one's mouth. Not only do I feel as though I have a two-foot jaw, but the dull ache from the extracted teeth starts about six inches back from my ears, and the wayward stitch silk was apparently two metres long and wrapped around fifteen different teeth.

The spaciness was not assisted by the way in which the Army of Reconstruction, absent for a few days last week for mysterious purposes of their own, leaped enthusiastically back into the fray. Today their efforts included random drilling, knocking holes in the side of the house for several hours, climbing into the roof to fiddle with the geyser, carrying ladders and about sixteen metres of copper piping repeatedly through the living room, hammering roofing struts merrily all day, and shutting Golux into the ceiling, causing desperate and plaintive mewing. Adding to the confusion, today was Lizzie's day for cleaning, so all of the above was punctuated with vaccuum cleaning, tumble drying and varied thumping. I am amazed that jo&stv survived their visit. They are probably lucky that they didn't co-incide with my sister, who came for tea with the new niece, who is very endearing, but who screams blue murder when her nappy is being changed. I'm feeling a little frayed. Can't think why.

On the upside, however, the Evil Landlord, possibly in a futile effort to atone for the Surprise Crunchy Pewter Pastry, put up new shelves in my study this weekend. They look very good, and my books are now all more or less in order; even better, the rest of the house has absorbed an extra four bookshelves, which are now balanced precariously in various corners and are taking the tottering piles of overflow very nicely. Books breed like rabbits, bookshelves breed like elephants, but a small herd clearly just wandered through. In the mating season.

Yup, you've been sort of fuzzy about the edges for a while now. This blog entry sounds as if you're returning to clarity, though :)

I'm lucky with Kathleen, it seems. Maia also apparently doesn't like having her nappy changed. Not only does K not mind, she likes the positioning of her normal changing mat, and chats and smiles at the picture of the violin on the wall. Odd, but appreciated.
