Suspicious. This new computer configuration - my hard drive, Evil Landlord's motherboard et al - has developed a worrying tendency to turn itself on overnight, or while I'm out during the day. If I find it's been nosing around internet porn in my absence, we shall have Words. (Apart from anything else, as stv points out, this adds a new, worrying dimension to the phrase "turns itself on").

Somewhat dozy couple of days, I have an epic headache trying to manifest, which is only partially working because I'm valiantly beating it back with Drugs, TM. Also, minor depression because I'm pretty sure the young actor who was murdered in Cape Town a few days ago was an ex-student of mine. I've always had a soft spot for drama students, they tend to be interesting, flamboyant and in need of patience and understanding because the damned drama department demands a hundred percent of their time and energy, wantonly assuming that any other courses for which they happen to be registered are more of an inexplicable error in taste than anything else. He was a particularly nice lad. I don't believe in hell, but I am willing to allow its specific existence so that the bastards who left him naked in a field with a bullet wound in his head burn in it eternally.

Sorry to hear about the murder - seems particularly senseless and sad.

Yes, but if it's checking out www.cyvarwydd.com or any site where I've sold stories, that can't be all bad, can it?

I have no idea if it's demonstrating the good taste to read your work, because so far it's covering its tracks suspiciously well. I mean, at least it could be up-front about this stuff!

I had a class or two with him in undergrad. I remember he had a very elvis-like hair style back then. Seemed like a nice guy. What has pissed me off the most about the press coverage of the whole thing is blind patriotic rhetoric that we shouldn't let this sort of thing encourage us to leave the country. I think people being randomly murdered on a regular basis is a bloody good reason to leave this fucking place.

There are various power on when there is activity on the modem line settings, i.e. someone dials your house. Also computers can be set in the BIOS to turn themselves on once a day, eg, just before you come home. If it is happening more than that, your computer may have been visited by the static electricty fairy. Awww, she likes you...

What is depressing me no end in the aftermath of the murder is that the other poor guy who was shot right beside him and died in exactly the same way is pretty well a footnote in the media coverage. I have been trying to point this out at work (a certain newspaper) with absolutely no success. There are times when I despise my job.

Yes! I noticed exactly the same thing yesterday, reading one of the community papers (which by and large I don't do, on aesthetic grounds). It's universally "Actor and his friend", not "Designer and his friend". Bloody celebrity culture. Grrrr.
