Weekends with SCA events are always a bit of a blur. Weekends with an SCA event, a Shire political meltdown and sixteen essays to mark on vampires and the erotic are downright surreal. Also, for some benighted reason given that I've just spent two days cooking for the event and am suffering from exhaustion and hungover feet, the mood took me to do an elaborate two-course roast chicken meal for jo&stv and the Friendly Psychologist last night. Usual upshot: guests weaving and groaning, forswearing all food for the forseeable future. Exhaustion aside, it was worth it to see jo give the Evil Landlord a surprise stealth back-rub without actually incurring the strange Germanic oaths which usually result if anyone tries to lay hands on his person.

The sequel, this morning, was even more entertaining: jo arrived with no less than three bottles of gin, as the result of a complicated supply system involving six people, four households, two replacements and my abysmal memory. She also proceeded to finish up the remnants of my latest creation, the Evil Tar-Pit Chocolate Pudding A La Captain Jack ("Why has the rum gone?" "It's all in the pudding") which defeated five of us last night and was consequently lurking evilly in the 'fridge. I am left in awe at her capacity. Although no more so than usual.

Today I cooked two giant carrot cakes and a chicken quiche. I am inclining to the theory that it's hormonal.

Congratulations on what was a no doubt fabulous event, and on Adamastor turning 10! I'm sorry we couldn't be there, but we were thinking of you.

Hugs,
Rhieinwen & Umberto

Thank you! I got to read out your message, btw, which was fun. It was surprisingly emotional, remembering all our much-loved visitors and departed friends.

A Shire political meltdown? Oooh. Sounds intriguing.

It is. It is a lively combination of really rather a lot of alcohol, boisterousness, bumptiousness, weaponry, denial, offence, confusion and huffs.
Fact 1: you can't have been drunk if your friends let you drive home
Fact 2: it's not dangerous to wave weapons about if it's called a dance

The Shire list is clocking up some frenetic activity. The things you miss!

Ebullient supplies of gin, roast chicken and rum-filled chocolate pudding o' doom: added to the list of reasons I *wish* I was in Cape Town.
