The 2006 Bulwer Lytton contest results are up. I have just spent a happy hour gurgling with hysterical laughter, and watching in awed horror as my vocabulary turgidifies, hyperbolates and slides inexorably down the drain. Current absolute favourite, from the random runner-up category: "Twas brillig, and the toves were not just slithy, they were stinking drunk."

[livejournal.com profile] first_fallen recently supplied our felines with a bag of fresh catnip. The dear little druggies spent yesterday afternoon munching, giggling and generally acting like a bunch of stoner hippies. Ounce was particularly entertaining: he played madly with a random catnip leaf, leaping vertically into the air to pounce on it from a dizzy height, and then lay in front of the heater for the next hour, trying to wash his paws and missing. He's much less paranoid when he's stoned: we may have to introduce a regular supply for theraputic purposes.

Teehee!

"The day was like any other, except that this was a Wednesday so it was really only like 1/7th of the other days."

That slithy toves line should be immediately disqualified because it makes me really *want* to read that book. Far too good to be a worst first line.

Catnip is fun. What fascinates me is how differently individual cats react to it. I've had cats who kind of shrug and say "okay, thanks...", cats who go into a sensualist frenzy and roll all over the bush in a frankly embarrassing X-rated ecstasy, and one who got really, really *intense*. He would slowly, but with great focus and determination, munch his way through as much of the stuff as he could get at (the bag had to go in well-closed cupboards), then lie around for a while looking hungover and unhappy. It seemed pretty cruel to give him the stuff, actually, unless we managed to dose it right.

I've also heard of a cat who would go out to the garden just once every day to enjoy his afternoon leaf. That's all. He knew when he'd had enough.

My favourite entry is the punning one that ends "Bye bye Mesoamerican Pi".

I see a writer from Kwazulu-Natal won a few categories! Obviously not much else to do there. :)
