The big black maurauding tomcat (the one that beat Todal up so badly) came into the garden on Wednesday night, and, after a full minute of sound effects that suggested forty or so berserker felines were being slowly strangled in a large and resonant tin drum, the Evil Landlord and I went out to survey the battlefield. Golux, she of the angsty solemnity and insecure tentativeness, had, in a strangely unlikely twist of fate, treed the tom up the bottlebrush on the front patio, creating a scenario curiously reminiscent of that photo with the bear. (Except that the tom is a big, black, fluffy thing with white blotches on his nose, suggesting he's the reincarnation of an inept paintball addict.)
We went into co-ordinated SWAT team mode instantly. The EL took up a back-up position at the foot of the tree, while I scampered off, chortling happily, to connect up the hosepipe and switch it on to full. EL then sprayed the beastly animal every which way from Sunday, causing it leap madly onto the roof and head off into the middle distance, wailing, like the exact opposite of a scalded cat.
The fact that I have a full-blown cold at the moment is possibly a direct result of the EL's over-enthusiastic tom-watering, which caught me in a backswing, but I can only say it was worth it. Heh.
