The Evil Landlord has been retrenched from his job, as a result of which he's (a) in the house all day, driving me crazy; (b) in the middle of about five carpentry projects simultaneously; and (c) celebrating. Celebratory braai last night, taking place squarely in the middle of (a) courtesy of the Usual Cape Town Cussedness, high winds and occasional burst of rain, and (b) courtesy of my defective physique, my second bout of gastric 'flu in a month, necessitating me being pale, withdrawn and pained all evening, and eating very little.

Memo to self: stop listening to wall-to-wall Belle & Sebastian. Their particular brand of gentle, whimsical, poignant, bittersweet, off-the-wall love songs with odd and unlikely lyrics is making me feel even more pale and very, very single, a state not materially assisted by the fact that I am currently re-watching the wonderful BBC Pride and Prejudice*, which means I am going to have to re-read the book again, it being one of my absolute favourites in the whole world evah, but horribly inclined towards Matters Of The Heart.

Memo to self: acquire more Belle & Sebastian.

* I didn't used to get the Colin Firth thing, but I think [livejournal.com profile] starmadeshadow has corrupted me.

Retrenched is good? What will EL do now? We await the next soapy installment...

EL's company (ritual ptooey) has succumbed to Upper Level Management Stupidity, and decided to stop supporting the project he's worked on for eight years. Since the project they propose to move him to is apparently boring and beneath his dignity, he has elected to take a fat voluntary retrenchment package and hang around for a few months while he finds something else. This may possibly include contracting to support said original project at three times his usual fee, as Upper Level Management Stupidity has caused everyone who actually knows anything about it to leave the company in droves and they still have support contracts with clients.

It's been a fascinating exercise in Dilbert management to watch from the sidelines. I used to think Scott Adams made all that stuff up.

I think he should try to step up a rung. You know, go from E.L. to Evil Overlord. Start deciding where you want the moat.

Dilbert is so accurate that I sometimes entertain the notion that "Scott Adams" is the pseudonym of one of my colleagues ;-) Not lately, as I have whittled down the colleagues and I'm far, far from the madding crowd. But back then, when I was in the thick of things.

(fat voluntary retrenchment package)++

Dilbert is funny because it's true.

All right, enlighten then ;>. I watched the bit with Elizabeth at Pemberly (and Darcy swimming) last night just before I went to bed, and had the most interesting dreams all night... ;>

Yep, there certainly *is* a fine prospect from the window down towards the lake ;-)

1) Congratulations to Evil Land/overlord
2) Still don't get Colin Firth, but okay, whatever
3) If you like whimsical and unlikely love songs, have you tried Magnetic Fields? With added Lemony Snicket.

I dunno what it is about Colin Firth; actually, I suspect it might be Darcy rather than the actor. I've had a passionate crush on Darcy since I was about 12, and Colin Firth does give him rather a desirable brooding intensity :>.

Have never heard of Magnetic Fields. < googlegooglegoogle >. OK, have heard of the Gothic Archies, although don't ask me in what context. The recurrence of the word "electro" in the Magnetic Fields blurbs gives me pause, though. I am only somewhat and occasionally a child of the 80s.

< moregooglegoogle> Oops, silly me. Of course I have heard of the Gothic Archies in the context of Lemony Snicket. < feels silly >. Am now really, really hating the dialup thing, I want to hear all this music. Pshaw.

Electro? God knows where that came from. It's all very minimalist and acoustic, what I've heard. With very New York witty lyrics, eg "It's making me blue. Pantone 292."

Send me your postal address and I'll send you a sample.

"electro" is just new romantic all over again. If Gary Newman released "Cars" today, it would be electro.
