I don't really think of myself as a Zimbabwean any more: the bulk and focus of my life has been in Cape Town for nearly twenty years. I also tend to think of myself as having a certain degree of detachment from the country's current state of disaster, possibly in sheer self-defense.

Then I register a Zim student this morning, and discover that simply reading her Shona surname on the reg form leaves me fighting back tears.
