I've come to realise that the reason a Real Full-Time Job gives one more money is not only because it has an actual salary attached - it's because being immured in an office all day means one has far less chance to actually spend it. Being on leave is thus Slightly Dangerous. Today I could only wander out of the house after lunch, as I had to wait until the armed response people had replaced the wireless transmitter for the alarm. Even with only the afternoon as an arena of activity, I still managed to acquire a bunch of groceries, a bedside lamp, a fluffy blanket for my bed, two potato peelers, two pairs of jeans, some fancy dishcloths and a set of potholders. Tomorrow I shall go and watch Prince Caspian and The Incredible Hulk, not necessarily in that order, and can only hope that they distract me sufficiently from spending any more money than I have to on more work clothes, replacement rubbish bins for the guest room, bathroom and study, a nice vase for my office, and the missing Richard Morgan. (I'm supposed to be supervising someone's PhD in Richard Morgan, and in a moment of mental aberration ordered two copies of Woken Furies from Take2, instead of one of Woken Furies and one of Altered Carbon. Spare Woken Furies going free to the first local post-cyberpunk-fancier who asks...)

Further to the random spending of money, I have succeeded in persuading the Evil Landlord of the desirability of lining the passage with bookshelves. Since he's just wandered into my study and rescued me from the two-metre pile of books whose slow-motion totter I was preventing by the exercise, at a perilous angle, of both hands and one foot, I can only say this is hopelessly overdue.

Must now go and socialise with the houseguests. To come full circle, it's probably a good thing that three of the four of us are currently working full-time, since something has to break up the otherwise more or less wall-to-wall wallowing in eating, drinking and random badinage.

...and a partridge in a pear tree?

(sorry)

And, enjoy the Random Bandiage. Goodness knows, I crave it desperately.

Mmmm, pear tree, wouldn't mind one of those. Although actually I'd prefer a lemon tree. I think my cats would enjoy a partridge :>.

Badinage is an essential of life, and friends who supply it are prized beyond rubies.
