Thought for the day: the student sitting in my office waiting for me to finish a phone call would receive a far more favourable response to his actually completely inappropriate and misdirected query if (a) he had taken a bath any time in the last week, and (b) he wasn't chewing gum continuously with his mouth open.

Also, if the phone doesn't stop ringing, I may have to acquire a shotgun.

I'm bunking Jim's birthday party this evening on the grounds of (a) the strong chance I'd rip someone's throat out with my teeth, and (b) being dead.

It's that sort of slucky sound that gets me. I kept looking up from my phone conversation and giving him a dirty look, to which he remained absolutely oblivious. Eventually I put my hand over the mouthpiece and told him not to chew gum in my office, at which point he gave me a dirty look and pouched it in his cheek.

An unrelated question - can edible ostrich eggs be got anywhere in Cape Town? I can get them near work for £15. it would be odd if they're easier to procure in London than in CT.

Yes, you can get them at some delis and farm stalls but they are huge & so only useful if you are making breakfast for a really large group. I ate some scrambled at Oudtshoorn when I did the cycle tour. :)

1 Ostrich egg is equivalent to 24 large hen eggs, apparently. The flavour is supposed to be light, and similar to hen.

I hate stinky people. It really bugs me. We had auditors here recently, we called them Mumbles, Giggles and Stinky. Stinky would stand right over me and ask me to do something, I nearly gagged several times.

Gum chewer: You put on the Mum tone of voice & tell him to bin it if he wants your help, or to leave, Right Now!

Phones ringing: some phones come with a three position switch underneath somewhere (ok, so I have Really Old Technology) which can be switched to 'Hi', 'Low' or 'Off'.
*Pause for you to rant on spelling 'Hi' like that*

'Off' is great, but not good for business. 'Low' is better than 'Hi'.

Otherwise suggest you invest in a hose!
